I just got a new fish tank and its all set up, and running and I have a fish in it. How do I clean it?
My fish tank has a pump and everything. It is just a mini betta cove tank, but the bottom of it is starting to get dirty and the old food droppings are getting slimy, how do I get rid of it without dumping all the water out ands tarting over?
Use a tightly knitted small net to get all of that out.You should do that daily and not wait for it to get too bad. Also get yourself a couple of algae eaters and catfish(the aquarium kind lol). They will help you keep the tank cleaner. Also do not overfeed your fish. It will contribute to rotting, slimy waste at the bottom. Only feed them enough that they can consume within 5-10 minutes or so.
Note that after cleaning with the net, the water may be a little foggy after you are done. (Try not to swish everything around more than necessary). If after you are done, the water does not clear up after a reasonable amount of time (30-60 minutes), take 1/3rd of the water in the tank out and replace it with fresh water. No more than a 1/3rd though and try to keep the temperature of the new water, as close as you can to what is in the tank, so you don’t shock/stress your fish. And check the PH of the water, and make sure the range is good. If not add, the necessary chemicals to bring it up to par. (You should check the PH often anyway as a regular habit. If your PH is off balance, your fish can die

Live Plants in Tank/Water Changes?
I have two betta fish and each has his own one gallon bowl. My dad thought that getting a live plant would make the fish live longer and be able to eat off it. Is that true? Can it get nutrients from the plant that pellets and flakes can’t give? Also, I am doing about a 30% water change each week. Is that good enough? Should I do more, less or just that? And I have gravel and rocks in the bowls. I did a full water change once my fish had been in there for about two weeks and the rocks were covered in slime and some slimy stuf floated above the water when I took out the gravel&rocks. Is that ok? Or will it hurtt my fish? How often should I do a full change?

Okay, plants will help to absorb the ammonia that builds up between water changes. A one gallon bowl is too small for a betta but if you aren’t going to get them bigger homes you should add a small Java Fern or clump of Java Miss since those are both low light plants that won’t need special care. Please change the water in their bowl 100% twice per week and make sure they aren’t subject to temp changes (keep away from drafty windows, doors, etc) because they are tropical fish that like heat.
By the way, Bettas are strictly carnivorous fish and will not eat off the plants. Please feed them a betta pellet or flake. You can supplement them with frozen bloodworms and/or daphnia once of twice per week as a treat.
