What is the average heating oil consumption for a home during the summer months in New England?
I am trying to figure out if I am burning an unusually high amount of heating oil during the summer months. I had my 250 gallon tank filled in mid April and it ran out of oil today (10/12). 41 gallons a month seems like a lot of oil for heating water during the Spring, Summer and Fall. It is just my wife and I living in the house and we take average length showers once a day. Please let me know if my consumption is too high.
If you have your hot water heater as one of the zones of a hot water Central home heating system, your whole house furnace is running just to heat your hot water, in which case, that consumption would be about right.
If you have an oil fired hot water heater that consumption rate is way high.
Also you should check for leaks, and if the fill pipe is accessible to strangers, you may have a theft problem- get a locking cap.

How To Practice Water Saver Tips
Water saver tips have become the need of the times. Water is one of the most essential natural resources. However its supply is decreasing as human population swells and depletes valuable fresh water systems.
The average household uses 22,000 gallons of hot water per year only for shower and baths. Most of all this water is heated leading to fuel consumption and green house emissions. Here are some Water saver tips that will conserve this precious resource of water in our homes and gardens:
1. Check for leaks: Ensure that your home plumbing system is free of leaks as many houses have secret leaks. Read your meter after putting your pump off for one hour and suppose the meter shows a difference, then there is leak.
2. Investigate toilet leaks by filling the tank with food coloring.. If the toilet is leaking, color will show within half an hour. Check toilet for worn out rusted or bent parts. You can easily replace these parts.
3. Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Get rid of tissue, pads via the garbage bin.
4. Do not waste water from a shower that can be used again for flushing and watering in the garden.
5. Repair leaking faucets. A leaking faucet can cost up to 2,700 gallons per year which will add to the cost of water and strain the septic system.
6. Shorten your showers. Keep a timer for your showers. Alternatively, replace your shower head with a low-flow model.
7. Do not allow water to run while brushing your teeth or washing face.
8. Operate automatic dish washers and clothes washers when fully loaded or properly set.
9. Do not use tap water to thaw your frozen food. Use your thaw option in your fridge or the microwave instead.
10. Kitchen sink disposals use a lot of water to treat waste. Dispose your kitchen waste by compost system rather than garbage disposal that can add to solids that clog the septic tank.
11. Insulate your water pipes. This reduces wasting of water while it heats up.
12. Check your pump if it has leakage.
13. If toilet flush gets stuck and starts wasting water get it replaced.
14. Install a low-flow shower head. Replace your water guzzling shower head with a water-efficient model and reduce your water consumption by half.
15. Put up a rainwater tank: Rain water can be collected and used for domestic purposes such as flushing the toilet and doing the laundry.
16. Recycle grey water: Recycle water in the bathroom for other uses around the home. Water collected from a shower can for example be used to water plants or flush toilets.
