To mothers who breastfed past a year…?

I am breastfeeding my 9 mo old daughter and don’t plan to wean until she is at least a year old. Why did you continue nursing? Was it more for comfort or bonding? Was it for nutrition still? Don’t babies get more of their nutrition from actual food starting from this point forward? And when do you nurse exactly. If my daughter has 3 meals a day plus snacks, I doubt she would still be hungry to nurse. So, do you just do it at nap times and bed times? Any answers would be greatly appreciated. I guess I don’t know how much I should keep breastfeeding in the picture once she’s eating “real human table food, drinking water and cow’s milk.”

I breastfed past a year simply because I didn’t get around to weaning until then. (Weaned at about 14 months.) She still enjoyed nursing, and was obviously getting plenty of nutrition from it.

Yes, babies do get the majority of their nutrtion from solids after a year, but that doens’t mean that breastfeeding suddenly becomes useless. The breastmilk contains nutrients and calories, and of course immunities and other good things.

If you still enjoy breastfeeding after a year, continue. Nurse as often and as long as you and baby wish. Some toddlers only nurse 2-3 times a day (typically bedtime and naps), mostly for comfort/bonding. Others continue to nurse more often and get much of their nutrition that way. Whatever works for the two of you is fine.
