Is there something wrong with giving water to a baby?

I was babysitting my 10 week old grandson yesterday. He is a healthy , bottle fed baby. When my daughter in law dropped him off, she said “oh he’s been vomiting a lot today”, then she gave me a few bottles of formula, and left. Since he’d been vomiting all day I figured that another bottle of formula might be a bad idea for an upset stomach, so I gave him a bottle of warm, boiled water, which he drank like a starving man. He settled and slept until she came back four hours later. When I mentioned I’d given him water, she acted like I’d given him poison ! She appeared horrified, but didn’t explain anything, and shortly she went home.

You can give a 10 month old water – that’s fine. Babies under 6 months are not supposed to have water because it has no nutritional value and they don’t need it. Babies under 6 months are only supposed to have formula/breastmilk to drink. If he’s vomiting a lot though, give him Pedialyte. You’ll want to replace those lost electrolytes before he gets dehydrated.

Tips On How To Baby Proof Your Home

It is our job as parents to make the world safe for our baby to develop and grow. Babyproofing is a way to safeguard the baby from hazardous things at home and also keeps your precious possessions safe. You can begin by bending and looking around the home from the baby’s level.

Look for sharp and Small Things: Baby will put whatever he finds in his mouth and it is vital to keep the table and floor of all objects like paper clip, cigarette butt, coins, which are less than one and half inches in size.  Get bigger knobs if you have gadgets with small knobs which come off. Razor blades, knives and scissors must be kept away from the baby. Don’t leave broken pieces of glass or other sharp things in the waste bin but throw them immediately.

Lookout for Electrical items: Keep all theelectrical outlets covered with plastic plugs which are available in the hardware store and avoid any dangling cords in your home. Keep fans out of reach of the child.

Keep away Poisons items: Shiftcleaning material to an elevated place and place a child lock on cabinets which have toxic chemicals. Children can even drink things which taste bad only to try it. There are a few house plants which are toxic and get a list of such plants from the Extension Office. Throw all left-over cigarettes and drinks after a party as even small amount of alcohol is poisonous for the baby.

Lock Medicine Cabinets: Avoid taking outmedicines in front of the child and don’t tell him that medicine is “candy.” High dose of any medicine can be fatal. Store the Poison Control phone number with you and keep ipecac syrup at home.

Beware Of Hot Food: Make sure that the food heated is not too hot and keep pot handles looking behind the stove.

Keep an Eye for Plastic bags. Plastic bags can be very dangerous, if the baby puts it over her nose and mouth, it will be suffocating. Throw them immediately.

Keep an Eye on Stairs: Install and keep the safety gates closed at the both sides of the stairways.

Secure Valuables: Keep valuable objects things in a locked drawer.

A child can reach places which are higher when he is able to stand, and you must remove things from her reach:

• Keep out shaking tables or any other unstable furniture as the baby can trip when trying to pull himself to stand.
• Keep the crib mattress to a low level and don’t keep big stuffed toys there.
• Be careful for hanging items like cords, curtains etc.
• Keep all hazardous material far from the reach of the baby.
• Keep the temperature of the water heater at 120 degrees F to keep the baby safe if he turns on the tap. Don’t ever leave the baby in water alone.
• The baby should not be allowed to stand in a grocery cart, but be seated with the safety strap.
• The baby should not stand in the high chair.
