Are these roaches or some type of water bug???
I just went down to the basement to do a load of laundry and i saw what looked like a super roach. This thing was huge, and had wings. Now keep in mind I have had my share of the common roach. This was not the same, what was it?
We have them here in Texas, usually see them after it rains. They sure look like roaches to me, I’m scared to death of them…lol 
The Palmetto Bug
One of the group commonly referred to as “Palmetto Bugs”, the American roach is the largest (1-3/8″ to 2-1/8″) of the roaches infesting homes. It has reddish brown wings and is a good flyer. American roaches often invade from sewer systems and heavily mulched areas. The female attaches the egg capsule, containing 15-18 eggs, in high areas in garages, closets, utility rooms and fireplaces. Found nearly anywhere in the house, American roaches contaminate food, carry disease, damage book bindings, fabrics and wallpaper. Get Rid of Roaches
If you think the only good roach is a dead roach, you’re wrong. For even dead roaches can cause harm in ways you’ve probably never imagined.
Scientists say the dead roach’s eggs, shell, blood and digestive enzymes can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, particularly asthmatics. These potential allergens can remain in the environment long after the roach has died.
Brian Key, chief of allergy and clinical immunology at the University of Kentucky, said about 60 percent of asthmatics are allergic to roaches. The usual victims are laboratory workers, students and field workers who are frequently exposed to roaches dead or otherwise, according to Dr. Francois Haas and Sheila Sperber Haas in “The Essential Asthma Handbook.”
“A report by the US Agricultural Department cited studies which show that millions of people are allergic to cockroaches. Reactions can range from a runny nose and skin irritation to difficulty in breathing, shock, and in extreme cases, even death,” said the editors of “Health Alert”, a publication of the Health Action Information Network.
To crack down on roaches, here are some suggestions from “Insect and Rodent Control Through Environmental Management: A Community Program” published by the World Health Organization (WHO):
Avoid dampness within the house, especially in the kitchen and near water pipes and sinks. Repair leaking faucets, make sure the drainage is working, and avoid spilling water.
Keep the house clean and tidy. Clothes and other household articles should not be kept on the floor.
Store food in close containers or keep it inside closed cupboards. Household refuse should be placed in closed containers and disposed of properly.
Improvements inside the house can eliminate the hiding places of roaches. Plug cracks and crevices in walls and floors.
Keep yards and vacant lots clean. Articles which are no longer used should not he placed there.
Make adequate arrangements for both liquid and solid waste disposal in the community.
Aside from this, the following measures are recommended by “Consumer Reports”:
Remove clutter – newspapers, piles of boxes, and so on from areas where you’ve seen roaches.
Outside, trim bushes near air vents to keep roaches from getting into the house.
Don’t leave pet food out for long. (Next: Bloodsucking bugs.)

What’s the difference between a “water bug” and a roach?
My house was just sprayed and I’ve killed three roaches (or what I thought were roaches). I asked my boyfriend why there would be roaches in the house right after I sprayed and he said they weren’t roaches they were “water bugs”. They look like roaches to me…either way shouldn’t the bug guy have killed these guys when he came??
Technically, the term “water bug” should only apply to insects in the Order Hemiptera which are primarily aquatic in habitat – this would include water boatmen (Corixidae), backswimmers (Notonectidae), giant water bugs (Belostomatidae), and possibly others like water striders (Gerrids).
However, in many areas, the term “water bug” is used as a colloquial expression to refer to the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana).
Most true water bugs, naturally enough, stick to the water. They are sometimes attracted to porch lights and backyard pools, but are very rarely found inside the house. It seems more likely that the “water bugs” you are seeing inside your home are actually American cockroaches.
Whether or not they should have been killed when the bug guy came depends on what he was spraying with, or whether he used some other control product entirely.
While once it was common practice to combat roaches by dousing the entire house in broad-spectrum powerful insecticides (that were usually also very poisonous to humans) – now it is far more common to use other products such as cockroach-specific bait gels (i.e. Maxforce).
These products are much more effective in the long run, but they can sometimes take a few days (or longer) for the toxin to take effect (they are often slow-acting to ensure that all of the insects in the area get dosed – both by eating the bait, and indirectly by eating the poison-laden poop of the insects that have already eaten the bait).
It’s also theoretically possible that your bug guy is more interested in repeat business rather than controlling your bug problem, and has used something that is relatively ineffective – so you have to keep having him come back.
