Question about liquid plastic casting resin!?

Hi, my niece is doing a school project of a gold rush scene and I am helping her. We want to make the water realistic, and I was thinking about using clear liquid plastic casting resin, but I wanted to know if I could pour it onto a sand paper base and also if it would melt foam? I wanted it to look like its a stream with sand and gold sparkles at the bottom.

The liquid plastic is some miserable stuff to work with, if you’re referring to “Castin’ Craft” Resin…strong odor, and can be temperamental. I would recommend an epoxy resin instead, such as Famowood (available at Lowes), Envirotex lite, (available at most art supply stores), Parks Super Glaze (available at Home Depot)…there are several brands…It gives a long “open time”, has virtually no smell….Easy 1 to 1 mix ratio…Cures water clear…
If you need it to cure a bit faster, I pop it in the microwave for a few seconds, just till warm, and it will “kick” much faster.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe will remain clearly dominant with growth driven by improved joining technologies and resins such as molecularly oriented PVC.  Large municipal market will be steady; construction to exhibit strong rebound Municipal markets dominated water and wastewater pipe applications in 2009 and are expected to exhibit good growth through 2014 in light of financial availability and the obsolescence of many water pipe systems. What brand / type of paint should I use with Polyester Resin Castings?

I am using “Aristocrat Water Clear Polyester Casting Resin” to create some small charms / pendants for jewelry, but I don’t know whether or not I should be looking for certain types of paints for such a material.

I don’t believe that colorant is usually painted on top of the cured surface of resins (polyester or epoxy resins), but resins can be colored while they’re still wet. You can buy the special colorants “soft for resins,” or you can just use artists oil paints–those will be transparent unless you add white which actually makes any color opaque.

You shouldn’t need a sealer on the resin normally, but if cured resins can be painted you might need something that would give the surface a bit of tooth for the paint to hold onto.

Or you could try some of the “glass paints” … they may stick well enough, or perhaps you could paint on top of *those* when they dry?

P.S. You can paint on top of polymer clay castings, etc., though, and on top of air-dry clays too. And you can also make molds from polymer clay or other materials, then cast polymer clay shapes in them and harden.
