Why do they attach the suffix “pogo” to so many water monsters? What does it mean?
I looked up various water-based cryptids, and I can’t help but notice that a lot of them have names that end in “pogo.” Such as Ogopogo, Winnipogo, Manipogo, Igopogo, etcetera. But why?
I tried to look up the Greek meaning for pogo, and it seems to be “beard.” But that doesn’t make sense to me. I thought that it might have something to do with pogo oscillation, but I can’t find a connection.
All the main water cryptids seem with the pogo suffix seem to come from Canada, so I ran “pogo” through an online French-to-English translator and “pogo” means “pogo” in both languages.
I’m guessing that it’s a lot like how political scandals in the U.S. have “gate” on the end, simply because the Nixon scandal was called Watergate, despite that Watergate was simply the office complex at the center of that particular scandal. Or something.
But when it comes to “pogo,” all I’m doing is guessing with nothing to back it up. Halp!
The only etymology I can find is what you already know:
1.Greek: beard; referring to a beard or beard-like structures
2. pogonocheilus, pogonochilus: With bearded lip.
However, this may shed a little more light on the matter:
Pogonophora, Pogophoran
1. Any of various wormlike marine invertebrates of the phylum Pogonophora that grow in upright chitin tubes, usually at great depths in the various seas off continents and large islands.
2. Pogonophorans have tentacles that are often featherlike, or like hairs of a beard, which are attached to the head region or anterior end. An intestine is present in the embryonic stage but it disappears as the animal matures. 3. A phylum of wormlike, sedentary marine animals that lack a digestive tract, possess a body cavity (coelom), and bear one to many fringed tentacles at the anterior end.
4. Commonly called “beard worms” because of their tentacles, pogonophores are long and slender, ranging in length from four to twelve inches, with a diameter up to one-tenth of an inch in larger species.

6. There’s no such thing as Miracle Grow for your brain. If it sounds like it’s too good to be true, it probably is. Everything gets accomplished with dedication and smart thinking. Get your mindset right and the rest will come naturally.
