Here is WHY?
1. The impact was NOT the primary mission of the LCROSS space probe.
2. We have crashed dozens of spacecraft onto the moon’s surface since 1960!!! Other countries have also crashed probes onto the surface.
3. There is and WAS no bomb, just the hull of a spacecraft. Most moon probes crash into the moon because their orbits are unstable. SO NASA decided to do some science with the crash; they would look for the presence of water on the moon.
4. NOT just to drink, but to sustain a permanent moon base. The water can also be converted into HYDROGEN and used to power the moon base.
The entire event was carried LIVE on NASA TV on the internet and the LCROSS web site has been up on the internet for MONTHS!

Wouldn’t the water recently discovered on the Moon have been the result of…?
a collision with a Comet? since the crater where the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) crashed into it on October 9 was actually produced by “some object” impacting the Moon thereby leaving behind remnants of it’s own composition?
Is it anywhere in the news that NASA scientists have speculated on this possibility?
Yes, that ice certainly comes from the impact of comets, just like the water in the Earth oceans.
In the later stages of the formation of the solar system there were say dozen proto-planets and quite a lot of comet-like, icy, small stuff. The proto-planets swept space clean with their gravitation fields and the comets rained on them. This also helped in making their orbits more circular.
Now the Earth had enough gravity to hold on to all that water vapor, which finally rained out and formed the oceans. But the Moon is too small to hold on to it. Most of the water escaped, but some condensed in cold places like eternally dark crater bottoms. And apparently, it’s still there.
