Does Your Dog Bark Its Head Off While Driving? Learn To Tackle It
If you have gone driving for a long trip with your dog barking all the way without a break, you might have felt like blowing up. It can be one hell of an experience and so annoying too. Whatever objects the dog sees outside its window is enough to make it bark constantly. The objects can be the moving ones like people, cars etc. or even the stationary ones like buildings and road signs.
Moreover, when one object is gone from the dog sight, another appears and the pattern goes on repeating like a continuous video. No wonder the barking never ceases!
Most of us are bound to get so angry that we started screaming at our pet dogs to calm down and stop that irritating incessant barking. However, to our dismay, this only seems to excite the dog all the more as the dog thinks that we are thinking and feeling in the same way as it is. The end result is a continuous ruckus with the dog barking its head off and you trying to concentrate on driving.
However, there is hope for a peaceful drive with your dog, which can be achieved through patience and proper training. The following tips can give you some guidance for the elusive peaceful drive.
a) In the starting, if you desire your pet dog to be all the more relaxed and calm, you need to set a good example and let the dog emulate you. Try playing some soothing music to calm your nerves. If the dog starts barking, you need to remain relaxed and calm. Talk calmly with the dog and gently caress its head while it is barking. This really makes the dog shift its attention from the outside scenario towards you. Besides, it learns to enjoy the attention without the constant barking.
b) A more powerful training method is to keep in handy a small water spray bottle by which you can quickly spray the water on the dog whenever it starts barking nosily. However, it is advised not to throw a bucket filled with water which can harm the dog. Generally, dogs do not like getting wet and especially not the short bursts of water. If it gets wet, it will at once stop doing the action, whatever it may be (here the barking). While spraying water, firmly say “No!” simultaneously or whatever you think will make the dog understand. Gradually, you can simply use the command to stop the dog as it will link the command with the unpleasant water experience.
c) Another easy ploy is to have a crate the next time you take your dog along for a drive. It is very easy and simple as the dog just needs to sit in the crate. The crate ought to be kept in such a manner that the dog is unable to view the outside objects which excites it into barking constantly. This is really effective. However, it may be difficult with huge dogs but is the best method to keep small or medium sized dogs quiet during the drive.
