can a shunt put in a six month old baby be removed later?
my son was diagnosed with water on the brain. at 6 months he had a shunt fitted to drain away the fluids. now he is two and a half years of age. can the shunt be removed in the future or is it life long.
I am 24 yrs old and I had Hydrocephalus when I was born. I had a 2 shunts put in at a very young age. I still to this day have the shunt . I never got it removed cause i was told it was very risky . Because where it was placed is right next to the brain. There was a high possibility of infection and things like that. So I decided to keep it in. It will eventually dissolve, but i have learn to deal with it.

Spina bifida is the most common debilitating birth defect in the United States, diagnosed in nearly one of every 1,000 pregnancies, leading newborns to devastating lifelong physical disabilities in the majority of cases.
Even though not all cases are necessarily life-threatening, the incidence of the loss of feeling and physical weakness is often aggravated with paralysis in lower limbs, bowel and urinary dysfunction, worsening when water on the brain (hydrocephalus) is diagnosed
Although abortion is often referred to as your “right to choose”, fetal surgery will always try to save an unborn baby’s life by informing pregnant women of the benefits to preserve the integrity of the fetus and work together for a happy end.

Spina bifida and other congenital spinal and brain disorders leading to neural tube defects (NTDs) have been successfully treated by means of fetal surgery, although birth defects can also be prevented by observing prenatal care.
The intake of folic acid and multivitamins, along with prenatal tests to detect spina bifida, such as the maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) blood test, are just two of the ways to save your baby’s life either with prevention or fetal surgery.

ok, my future sister in law is pregnant and her baby has water on the brain or fluid on the brain whichever you prefer, but what i was wondering is when its born, and they put the shunt in the neck does the head shrink back down? i dont want to sound all weird but id like to know please!!
Water on the brain has nothing to do with the size of the head. The skull is a confined space and it doesn’t grow or shrink in adults. However, that is not the case in infants, the skull is not fully formed and for sure after the water is drained it does shrink in accordance to the amount drained (which is usually not that much).
