(In plants) Why does the rate of photosynthesis decrease as the water potential of the leaves becomes more negative?

When the water potential in plants is decreasing, it means that the water potential gradient is steeper, hence more “free” water molecules would enter the leaves. However, this does not occur very rapidly if the difference in water potential gradient is small.

Hence, as water and sunlight are important components for photosynthesis, this phenomenon will decrease the rate of photosynthesis until the water potential gradient becomes zero. Then it has no difference in water potential among the epidermal cells surrounding the leaves and hence photosynthesis can occur normally.

When water potential becomes negative, the cell sap concentration will be higher, henceforth, the water in the surrounding epidermal cells would enter the stomata pores(guard cells) through osmosis. As the cell swells with water in the vacuole, pressure is exerted on the cell wall(turgor pressure). This cause the thin outer layer of the stomata pores to balloon out, pulling the thick inner layer with it.

This then results in the opening and closing of stomata pores. The mimosa plant closed their leaves when something brushes across it–also due to this occurrence. Because on the underside of their leaves, there are small swellings(pulvini) which cause changes in turgor pressure.

The bending movement of flowers which open their leaves during the day and close during the night and vice versa happens because of this too.

Handling problems during watering is an obvious fact for a big watering can as one has to lift, bend and fill it several times.
