water quality testing parameters
how to test water purifiers?
how do we determine which is a good water purifier for home drinking water purposes? which are the different chemical contaminants? what are the differences between borewell water, river water etc? how do we know which is fit for drinking. each water purifier company markets a different quality that makes their system better. as a layman, i am confused on parameters to judge.
thx
thanks. thats insightful. but in india, there is little awareness about water purifiers and purity required. all companies quote some different test to claim their water is purifier is better. as a result, there is no reference point to test which are good and which are simply adding on a lot of things that are not required.
thx
I used to work with a water salesman, we sold water filters.Probably you could call one and they come to your house and will tell you all about the different kinds of filters. There’s the cheapo units that attach to your faucet and the better ones that go under the sink with many stages of filtration. We sold counter top units one had a paper filter and the other a ceramic filter. The one with the ceramic filter is very effective. Distilled water is the purest but it takes awful, all the minerals and everything is taken out, but is good for making coffee etc. Osmosis water you usually find in the water stores is the best testing water and it’s what I like.
As to city water it may be pure when they test it, but they test it at the source. After it goes through all the pipes it can be dirty. I remember we sold some counter top units with ceramic filters to some people living in an apt building here in Los Angeles. A few months later they called to say the filters were not working. We went out and took the filters apart and found that they were plugged up with reddish brown mud. My friend said it was rust from the pipes in the building.

How Can I Get Pure Drinking Water?
Most right-thinking people polled that are concerned about the quality of the water they drink, would say yes. If like me you prefer the option of pure drinking mineral water when thirsty, because you are unsure about drinking tap water then this article will examine some of the reasons why.
For most of us that live in a home with a piped water supply we are used to just turning on the tap and seeing pure drinking water. The quality of your tap water is a matter of public record and this data is available to any concerned consumer that requests it, to examine what’s present in our water.
But, bear in mind that the parameters for testing water quality vary widely from country to country. Plus, making sense of it all is fine if you are a scientist but the majority of us have to live with an assurance from municipal water plants that all is well. Then, one day we read or hear something.
The popular press plays their part in confusing the issue with scare stories about harmful chemicals in our public water supply, to stories about how bottled water is just an expensive, over-rated product we can live without. However you look at it bottled water is big business and has grown because of our belief that it’s a good, safe and untainted product.
But on closer examination this is a largely unregulated industry that thrives on the goodness of its product and dismisses any bad or negative research that tries to prove otherwise. Opinions vary as to how to obtain the best, pure drinking water and we need to cut through the masses of information to make an informed judgement.
This can and does take up time but it could be time well spent if it means giving you and your family what I term water choice. A variety of easy, low cost, actionable options that gives you peace of mind and healthy water.
Take a look at my main site for more details.

Stats Problem Help 2 questions?
Total phosphorus is one water quality parameter of concern in the Everglades National Park. Suppose the EPA makes 35 measurements in a random section of the park, yielding a mean level of total phosphorus at 12.3 parts per billion (ppb) and a standard deviation of 5.4 ppd. The EPA wants to test whether the mean level is less than 15 ppb. Identify the null and alternative hypotheses.
A.)Ho: μ=15 Ha:µ≠15
B.)Ho: μ>15 Ha:µ≤15
C.)Ho: μ≤15 Ha:µ>15
D.)Ho: μ≥15 Ha:µ<15
In a test of Ho: μ≥70 Ha: μ <70, if the value of the test statistic is in the rejection region, what is the appropriate conclusion?
A.)Reject Ho and conclude Ha is correct.
B.)Reject Ho and conclude that Ho is correct.
C.)Do Not Reject Ha and conclude it is correct.
D.)Do Not Reject Ho and conclude it is correct.
For the first question, let’s look at each answer individually:
A) Can’t be this, because we’re looking to test if the mean is *less than* 15.
B) Can’t be this, because it’s using a less than OR equal sign for the alternative; we’re looking for just “less than”
C) Greater than 15? The question is asking for less than!
D) The correct answer. We want to reject the null that the mean is greater than or equal to 15, so we can accept the alternative, which is what we want.
For the second question: the value of the test statistic is in the “rejection region.” We’re always looking to reject (or fail to reject) the null. So, we reject Ho and accept Ha. (A)
