Question on sampling process of river water?
Explain and justify how river water is sampled (and ‘why’ it is sampled) and which are the best parts of the river for it to be collected from (and ‘why’ it is best to be collected from there) to be tested for pollution and contamination during a water quality procedure?
The methods depend upon the type of contaminate so it is not a simple matter to describe. For fully mixed contaminates, you can sample any part of the river stream. Some contaminates, like oils which will float, you sample the surface in still currents so the location of the test station is important. For heavy particulate you need to be sampling in a fully mixed location or from the bottom of the stream. You sample depending upon what you expect to find or suspect may be a contaminate. You should sample from the same location to provide consistency. You may sample at varying times of the day, week, or month depending upon what you suspect may be producing a contaminate. In large rivers or bodies of water multiple samples are taken because there may be wide differences in the location of contaminates.
