Why are pegmaitites imoprtant to society and what effect does water have on the viscosity of magma?

Question 1:
Pegmatites are rocks containing valuable mineral deposits such as quartz, feldspar, & mica. Gemstones are often associated w/ pegmatite deposits.
Quartz is an important mineral in making glass & semiconductors/microchips as well as gemstones.
Feldspar is used industrially in the glass-making process, in ceramics, & as gemstones (moonstone, etc.).
Mica is used in everything from paints to makeup. Anything w/ a sparkle. In the old days before glass became affordable, people used sheets of mica as windows on homes & in the doors of furnaces.

Higher water content lowers the viscosity of magma (makes it less thick). This is b/c it disrupts the bonds between silicon & oxygen in the magma.

Concentration is key here. Example: sugar syrup.
As you increase the concentration of sugar in water (via boiling off the water) the viscosity increases. The viscosity is a result of how much friction (interaction) exists between molecules in the fluid. The larger the molecules, and more numerous the intermolecular attractions (hydrogen bonds, van der Waals, etc.) the more viscous a substance is. Ergo, if you increase the number of molecules in solution (syrup vs. water) you increase the number of interactions and increase the viscosity.
Remember though that viscosity has many dependencies, not just on concentration; also depends on temperature, shear rate, and shear stress. Also, the viscosity does not linearly increase for some materials – make sure you understand the difference between Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids.
