Why do “Christians” continue to say the Fred Phelps of the world are “fringe”?

I am convinced, and always have been, that most Christians are really watered down versions of Fred Phelps. They may not do the screaming and the name calling, but they say essentially the same things. Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell, just to name 2, have expressed sentiments very similar to those of Fred Phelps, but they just said it with a Christian smile on their faces. Back in July of 2008 a man shot up a Unitarian Universalist Church because they were accepting of gays and too liberal.
Where I live most people are conservative Christians and many said about the shooting that took place that they didn’t care because the people were going to Hell anyway, and that the man just got them there faster.

For the people who say most Christians are not like that, 3 more US states passed same sex marriage bans this election. Even CA. The dislike is coming from somewhere.
