Do you need to keep an in ground pool filled with water year round?
I work for a hotel in Sevierville, TN. We have an outdoor pool that we had drained at the end of the season for some routine maintenance. My question is if we need to fill it with water to keep cracks from forming in the cement or the pool from pushing up out of the ground when it freezes. Is there any harm leaving it dry, or do we need to fill it back up? Any supporting references would be appreciated.
The water may even do more damage as it freezes in the pool the pressure it exerts on the inside of the walls is more likely to cause spalling and damage. If properly built, the pools walls should be able to contain any ground heave caused by frozen water in the ground. The manufacturor or installer should have the proper information for your specific pool.
Some fare better when left with some water for your concerned reason, just make sure if you add water you add the proper chemicals also.
